Four WSU researchers, including two from Spokane, have received grants for their next-generation DNA sequencing projects through the Genomics Core laboratory at WSU Health Sciences Spokane. The Genomics Core lab is one of several basic labs on campus that are available to faculty and to scientists from around the community. The lab, in collaboration with Illumina, Inc., provides sequencing-related services.
Medical Sciences associate professor Weihang Chai will use her grant to identify fragile sites in the human genome. Dr. Chai studies telomeres, strands of DNA at the tips of our chromosomes that protect our genetic data from becoming damaged.
Also from Spokane, Pharmaceutical Sciences associate professor Salah-uddin Ahmed has received a grant to research rheumatoid arthritis-associated biomarkers.
