Two new medical residents reach for journals provided for them at an orientation session this morning at Spokane’s Sacred Heart Medical Center.

College of Medicine hires new faculty

The WSU College of Medicine – has hired more than 40 clinicians and basic scientists to build the faculty necessary to support the operation of WSU’s new medical school. These faculty will develop and implement curriculum for the MD degree program, as well as do research and clinical work.

SHS students seek donations for wildfire relief

Life isn’t much fun when you’re sitting on a cot in a high school gym while a wildfire threatens your home. That’s why Speech and Hearing Sciences students have begun collecting books and toys to send to children displaced by fire in northeast and north central Washington. You can drop donations off at boxes in the SAC lobby and on the main floor of the Health Sciences Building.

Third founding dean finalist visits Spokane

The last finalist candidate for founding dean of the new WSU College of Medicine has visited the Spokane campus.

Dr. John Tomkowiak (right, pictured above with Bill Savitz of Ignite Northwest) is the dean of the Chicago Medical School at Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science. He is also the president of the university’s health system and the executive vice president for clinical affairs. Tomkowiak is also a professor and acting chair of the school’s Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences program.

Research grants go to two WSU Spokane faculty

Four WSU researchers, including two from Spokane, have received grants for their next-generation DNA sequencing projects through the Genomics Core laboratory at WSU Health Sciences Spokane. The Genomics Core lab is one of several basic labs on campus that are available to faculty and to scientists from around the community. The lab, in collaboration with Illumina, Inc., provides sequencing-related services.

Floyd remembered in Pullman, Michigan, Missouri

The late WSU President Elson S. Floyd was lovingly remembered during a ceremony at Beasley Coliseum in Pullman on Wednesday, August 26. You can read more about it here. It was a moving and wonderful tribute to the man who led WSU from 2007 until his death in June. The on-campus memorial was pushed back to late August so students and faculty could attend after their return for fall semester.
