Exercise Physiologist Certification

The BS NEP and MS CPD prepares students for the Certified Exercise Physiologist (EP-C) credential and specialty certifications through the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM). ACSM EP-Cs are fitness professionals with a minimum of a bachelor’s degree in an exercise science program and are qualified to pursue a career in university, corporate, commercial, hospital, and community settings. They are exercise trainers able to conduct complete physical assessments and interpret results to prescribe appropriate, personalized exercise programs.

Additionally, upon completing an approved clinical internship in the BS NEP or MS CPD, students can apply up to 400 of their practical experience hours to the ACSM Certified Clinical Exercise Physiologist (CEP) credential. To meet the total required clinical internship hours of 1200, students are responsible for logging the remaining hours on their own, after graduation.

The ACSM-CEP certification is a professional healthcare credential for individuals who provide exercise management, testing, and training to clients in a clinical setting. ACSM-CEPs prescribe exercise and lifestyle management, and are qualified to manage cardiac and pulmonary risks, training, and rehabilitation. They work primarily with individuals facing health challenges to create better outcomes through a combination of assessing risk and managing exercise implementation. They can work with individuals who may be recovering and rehabilitating from disease, injury, or other limiting factors.
