J. Kevin Dorsey, MD, PhD

Dr. J. Kevin Dorsey graduated cum laude with a B.S. in Chemistry from Fairfield University. After completing a PhD in biochemistry at the University of Wisconsin in 1968, Dr. Dorsey served a two-year term in the US Army and completed a postdoctoral fellowship in cell biology at Johns Hopkins University. He then became one of the founding faculty members of the Southern Illinois University School of Medicine in 1973. Dr. Dorsey went on to pursue an MD degree and graduated from the SIU School of Medicine in 1978. He competed an internal medicine residency and rheumatology fellowship at the University of Iowa before returning to Illinois. Dr. Dorsey practiced rheumatology at the Carbondale Clinic for 15 years while he continued his efforts as a medical educator by teaching freshman medical students. In 2001, he became the third dean of SIU School of Medicine—a position he served until December 2015.

As the Dean Emeritus, Dr. Dorsey continues to teach students internal medicine, rheumatology, and physical examination skills as well as promote empathy and clinical reasoning in the culture of healthcare institutions. Dr. Dorsey began a 1-year term as interim president of the Southern Illinois University system in July 2018. His current research focuses on physician professional behavior and the nature of the supervisor-trainee relationship as it relates to entrustment in the care of patients.
