Academic Integrity Violations

When an instructor finds a student has violated academic integrity standards or instructors published policies as articulated by their course syllabus, they must follow University procedures that are outlined by WAC 504-26-404 as well Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine procedures. The procedures are summarized below:

  • Inform Assistant Dean for Student Affairs
  • The instructor assembles evidence and upon reasonable notice to the student of the date, time and nature of the allegations.
  • Instructor should meet with the student to discuss the allegations and provide assembled evidence to the student. If the student admits to the violations, the instructor assigns an outcome in keeping with published course policies and notifies the office of student conduct in writing, including the allegations, the student’s admission, and the sanctions imposed. The written letter should offer resources to support the student including counseling center and Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine Office of Student Affairs.
    • Within Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine, the instructor must also copy the Office of Student Affairs, and Chair of the Student, Evaluation, Promotion, and Award Committee (SEPAC) with notification to the office of student conduct.
  • If the student wishes to dispute the allegation(s), the student has 21 days from the date of the decision letter to request review of the instructor’s determination and/or sanctions(s) imposed to the academic integrity hearing board.
    • Within Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine, student must copy Assistant Dean for Student Affairs and the Chair of SEPAC on the review request.
  • The academic integrity hearing board shall make a separate and independent determination of whether or not the student is responsible for violating the academic integrity policy and/or whether the outcome proposed by the instructor is in keeping with the instructor’s published course policies.
    • The academic integrity hearing board is empowered to provide an appropriate remedy for a student including arranging a withdrawal from the course, having the student’s work evaluated, or changing a grade where it finds that:
      • The student is not responsible for violating academic integrity policies; or (2) The outcome imposed by the instructor violates the instructor’s published policies.

Dismissal from Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine
