Floyd College of Medicine is committed to fostering close connections between our medical students and communities across Washington. To support these connections, we recruit volunteers to open their homes to students for week-long visits and introduce them to Everett, Spokane, Tri-Cities, and Vancouver, where they will complete their clinical training.

Our medical students study at the WSU Spokane campus for their first two years before transitioning to clinical training at community hospitals and clinics in one of four clinical regions, based at a regional medical campus. Hosts are needed for “Clinical Campus Weeks,” where first- and second-year students visit the communities where they will complete their training in their third and fourth years.

We aim to match each student to a community host who will welcome, support, and orient them to the local community during these visits. We seek families and individuals in the Everett, Spokane, Tri-Cities, and Vancouver areas to serve as hosts.

Community hosts plan activities and make introductions to develop students’ community connections. Hosts in Everett, Tri-Cities, and Vancouver provide homestays for their student during Clinical Campus Weeks. Hosts in Spokane are listed in a Spokane Community Connection Directory as a resource for students.

        Community Host Responsibilities

Community Connections

Community hosts introduce their student to community members over the course of the five Clinical Campus Weeks. These connections expand the student’s network in the local community. Although medical students have busy schedules during Clinical Campus Weeks, our hope is that the host and student can connect with a community or organization during these visits.

Local Exposure

Community hosts coordinate engaging activities with the student that highlight the locale each Clinical Campus Week. The goal is to present local recreational and cultural opportunities to the student as well as provide a moment of fun and relaxation during a student’s busy week of clinical experiences.

Community Nights

The college will host a community night event for all students and community hosts during select Clinical Campus Weeks. These events are held on or near campus and allow hosts and students to socialize and hear local and WSU speakers present on relevant topics regarding the local and greater WSU community. Community nights promote togetherness between all hosts and students while offering opportunities for local engagement.

Homestays

Community hosts in Everett, Tri-Cities, and Vancouver provide housing for their student during each Clinical Campus Week. These homestays help minimize expenses for students traveling away from Spokane. In some instances, students may not require a homestay due to family being local. Spokane hosts are excluded from the homestay requirement, as students at based in Spokane for the first two years of their learning.

Homestay Host Responsibilities

During Clinical Campus Weeks, homestay hosts:

Provide lodging within a 40 minute drive of campus

Provide the student internet access within their lodging

Provide a private bedroom for the student’s use

Provide access to cookware and kitchen space for the student’s use

Provide the student with a house key

Homestay hosts are not required to provide transportation or regular meals for students. A WSU staff member will conduct a site visit of a homestay host’s residence before the first Clinical Campus Week to verify the residence meets stated hosting requirements.

Now Accepting Applications for the 2025–2026 Period!

Clinical Campus Week Dates

First-Year Students

October 20-24, 2025

January 26-30, 2026

April 13-17, 2026

Second-Year Students

September 15-19, 2025

February 23-27, 2026

Become a Host

If you are interested in becoming a host, please contact the Student Affairs office.

  Email Student Affairs

Questions?

We have answers in our frequently asked questions.

  FAQs

What Students are Saying

   “Absolutely amazing family!!
