Floyd College of Medicine recognizes the rising use and utility of artificial intelligence (AI) tools and methodologies as a resource for students in the MD program. The following guidelines have been prepared by the Office of Educational Affairs, Office of Student Learning, and Office of Strategic Management to ensure students are informed of options that are available and guardrails that are recommended.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Data Security<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Protecting student, patient, and institutional data is a professional responsibility of all WSU students, staff, and faculty. When using AI tools,<strong> students must never<\/strong> enter protected health information (PHI), confidential educational information (including program resources), or any sensitive data into unapproved AI platforms. Information entered into public AI tools may be stored, processed, or used in ways that do not meet healthcare, privacy, or institutional security requirements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Students should use only WSU-approved AI tools that have been reviewed for security, privacy, and regulatory compliance. Approved tools help safeguard sensitive information, support responsible academic and clinical practice, and reduce the risk of unauthorized disclosure. Students may use approved AI platforms for educational purposes, including reviewing course materials, generating study aids, and clarifying concepts. Students should not upload examination materials, confidential faculty content, unpublished curricular materials, or protected health information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wsu-spacing-after--xsmall\">The following tools are approved and provided by Washington State University:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Microsoft Co-Pilot<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Google Gemini Notebook<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Students must utilize their WSU accounts on these platforms if uploading content created by WSU faculty, including learning objectives, lecture materials, and other resources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Any AI use related to the clinical environment or protected health information must comply with HIPAA and the policies relevant to your clinical experience site(s).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Use of AI for Assignments and Exams<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Unless explicitly permitted by the course director or assignment instructions, students may not use generative AI tools to create, modify, or substantially contribute to submitted academic work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If the assignment instructions permit the use of artificial intelligence tools (such as ChatGPT, Co-Pilot, Dall-E, etc.) and the student chooses to use those tools, it must be properly documented and credited. For example, text generated using ChatGPT-3 should include a citation such as: \u201cAI tool. (YYYY, Month DD of query). \u201cText of your query.\u201d Generated using OpenAI chat.openai.com\u201d Material generated using other tools should follow a similar citation convention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Suspected violations of AI-related academic integrity expectations will be addressed according to WSU\u2019s Academic Integrity Policy (identified in Washington Administrative Code <a href=\"https:\/\/apps.leg.wa.gov\/wac\/default.aspx?cite=504-26-010&amp;%3A%7E%3Atext=(i)%20Plagiarism.%2Cproper%20acknowledgment%20of%20the%20source\">WAC 504-26-010<\/a>) and may result in academic consequences, including failure of an assignment or course, depending on the circumstances. Included is the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to produce content without proper attribution, which will be considered plagiarism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Use of AI for Studying<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>With the right prompts, resources, and tools, AI can be an effective study partner for some students. However, AI should be used to support active learning and should not replace critical thinking, retrieval practice, and problem-solving that are essential for success in medical school and clinical practice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>AI-generated information may be inaccurate, incomplete, or outdated. Always verify AI-generated content against trusted course materials and authoritative medical resources (e.g., course materials or established medical texts) before incorporating it into your studying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When requesting clarity on the intent of a learning objective, we highly recommend reaching out to the faculty member and\/or the Assistant Deans for Pre-Clerkship Curriculum and Assessment  at <a href=\"mailto:medicine.educationalaffairs@wsu.edu\">medicine.educationalaffairs@wsu.edu<\/a> for guidance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Use of AI for Personal Statements, Experience Essays, and Other Application Materials<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>AI can be useful in the process of self-reflection and fine-tuning writing for application materials used for scholarships, research fellowships, and residency application. It is important to remember that organizations soliciting applications may use AI filters to identify essays that are the product of generative AI and only the recipient of an application can control how AI use is perceived\/interpreted. Students\u2019 best practice for these essays is to write a first draft without the help of AI, then (if AI input is desired), seek specific help from AI to adjust phrasing, tone, or word choice without dramatically altering the content of the writing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alternately, a student may use AI throughout the program to capture thoughts, perspectives, and reactions to milestones related to their professional development. These reflections may, in turn, be helpful to review before writing a personal statement or essay on an experience. Again, it is important for the student to use their own words and accurately reflect their current perspectives outside of the AI generated conversation rather than relying on direct wording from the AI tool.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Career Advising is always available to help with application materials; from the brainstorming process to final edits, there are real humans who will read these materials and provide feedback.
