DESCRIPTION:Prenatal Cannabis Use and Maternal and Child Health: Fragmented Systems\nMay 20\, 2025\n12:10 – 1:00 p.m. PDT\nHERB 432 (Speaker Virtual) or Zoom\nSpeaker\nQiana Brown\, PhD\, MPH\, LCSW\nAssistant Professor\, Rutgers University \nDr. Qiana L. Brown is an epidemiologist\, clinical and translational scientist\, social worker and former US Army nurse. She is an Assistant Professor at Rutgers School of Social Work\, where she directs the Substance Use Research\, Evaluation\, and Maternal and Child Health (SURE MatCH) Group at the School of Social Work’s Center for Prevention Science. From a health equity lens\, her research focuses on system-level change to improve maternal and child health\, centering on preventing prenatal substance use and examining the role of the built and social environments and health and social policies in shaping substance use and other health outcomes among women\, youth and families. Dr. Brown’s peer-reviewed research has been published in top-tier international public health and medical journals\, including JAMA. She serves on the editorial board of several peer-reviewed journals and is an Associate Editor for the Journal of the Society for Social Work and Research. In 2019\, Dr. Brown was named one of the Society for the Study of Addiction’s “Women of Future Influence in Addiction Science.” In 2021 she was elected and is currently a member of the Board of Directors for the College on Problems of Drug Dependence. Most recently\, in 2025\, she was appointed to her local Board of Education in New Jersey. Dr. Brown earned her PhD in mental health and drug dependence epidemiology from Johns Hopkins University and completed a postdoctoral research fellowship in substance abuse epidemiology at Columbia University. She earned her PhD in Applied Community Psychology at Portland State University. Dr. Leickly’s research interests include the experiences of people with serious mental illnesses (SMI) in a variety of contexts including community mental health centers\, supportive housing\, and public spaces (e.g.\, libraries\, parks). She also works at the intersection of SMI and homelessness in the public space\, where she and her colleagues completed a two-year evaluation of Portland Street Response\, an alternative first responder program designed to address over-policing of people experiencing mental and behavioral health crises and homelessness. Floyd College of Medicine’s Department of Community and Behavioral Health at Washington State University. Her work focuses on research\, dissemination\, and training for Contingency Management (CM)\, a behavioral intervention for substance use disorders. During the time she managed a large CM clinical trial\, she conducted or supervised over 1000 CM visits with people experiencing alcohol use disorders and co-occurring serious mental illnesses. Since then\, she has focused her efforts on developing and delivering CM training and technical assistance (TTA)\, primarily focused on CM to treat stimulant use disorder. She has played an important role in statewide CM rollouts in Washington and Montana\, supports CM TTA in partnership with American Indian/Alaska Native communities\, and is a consultant for California’s Recovery Incentives CM program\, the first Medicaid-funded CM mechanism. She has delivered more than 30 CM educational presentations or training seminars for regional\, national\, and international audiences\, and provides monthly CM coaching to over 100 treatment or healthcare service locations throughout the United States. She has co-developed extensive CM training resources\, including electronic tools for facilitating CM delivery and fidelity\, and has served on two national expert panels focusing on contingency management TTA. He will briefly review his foundational work on the topic in animal models\, discuss his work in human behavioral pharmacology models\, and describe the work he and his colleagues continue to do in the applied realm\, specifically as it applies to treating substance use disorders. Finally\, he will outline the work he hopes to conduct in this and other arenas over the next several years. \nJohn Roll earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Montana\, a Master of Arts degree from Saint Bonaventure University\, and a PhD from Washington State University. Working with the AIHC\, she has utilized her vast knowledge of the Indian Health Care Delivery System\, state and federal regulations that govern the Indian Health and insurance coverages to implement statewide strategies supporting Tribal and Urban Indian health programs. DESCRIPTION:Advancing HIV Care: Innovations in Treatment\, Prevention\, and Implementation\nMay 19\, 2026\n12:10–1:00 p.m. PDT\nHERB 432 or Zoom\nAdd to Calendar \nSpeaker\n \nRachel Safran\, MD\, FACP\, AAHIVS\, Physician and HIV Specialist\, MultiCare Spokane\, Internal Medicine. \nDr. Rachel Safran is an internal medicine physician and HIV specialist based in Spokane\, Washington\, serving as the Associate Program Director and Clinic Director for the newly accredited MultiCare Spokane Internal Medicine Residency. She is a Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of Washington School of Medicine and Washington State University Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine\, with a strong commitment to medical education\, workforce development\, and interdisciplinary training. \nDr. Safran’s clinical and research work focuses on HIV treatment and prevention\, with particular emphasis on emerging therapies and innovative care delivery models. She has been an investigator on multiple clinical trials evaluating novel antiretroviral strategies\, her work also spans quality improvement and implementation science\, including behavioral health integration\, population health strategies\, and expanding access to HIV prevention in underserved communities. \nA recognized educator and leader\, Dr. Safran has received multiple teaching and clinical excellence awards and was named Investigator of the Year 2024 by the MultiCare Institute for Research & Innovation. She is an active member of the American College of Physicians and the American Academy of HIV Medicine\, contributing to regional and national efforts to advance HIV care.
