{"id":29564,"date":"2024-01-26T13:55:52","date_gmt":"2024-01-26T21:55:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/medicine.wsu.edu\/news\/?p=29564"},"modified":"2024-01-26T13:55:53","modified_gmt":"2024-01-26T21:55:53","slug":"ciphers-seed-grant-funding-development-bilingual-physicians-project","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/medicine.wsu.edu\/news\/2024\/01\/26\/ciphers-seed-grant-funding-development-bilingual-physicians-project\/","title":{"rendered":"CIPHERS Seed Grant Funding Leads to Development of Bilingual Physicians Project"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A clinical professor in the WSU College of Medicine is using recently awarded grant funding to improve Chinese language and cultural competency in clinical settings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the spring of 2023, the <a href=\"https:\/\/medicine.wsu.edu\/about\/departments-units\/ciphers\/\">Collaboration for Interprofessional Health Education Research and Scholarship (CIPHERS)<\/a> opened applications for seed grant funding. Tao Wang, MD, PhD, a clinical assistant professor in the college and adult hospitalist for Providence Kadlec Regional Medical Center in the Tri-Cities, submitted a proposal titled, \u201cCultivating medical students to become bilingual physicians.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>CIPHERS selected Wang for the funding. Drawing upon training she gained as a participant in the CIPHERS Education Scholars Program to transform educational activity into scholarly activity, Wang designed a pilot study to cultivate medical students to become bilingual physicians. The purpose is two-fold\u2014to build the training physicians\u2019 personal identify formation and improve patients\u2019 safety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wang also advises the Medical Chinese Interest Group formed by several first- and second-year medical students. Their purpose is to improve Chinese language and cultural competency in health care. Wang\u2019s project gives this group more opportunities to practice interview skills with Chinese-speaking patients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In October, Wang and a group of 15 WSU medical students participated in the first-ever Tri-Cities Chinese Community Health Fair hosted on the WSU Tri-Cities campus.
