{"id":32903,"date":"2025-02-17T07:47:18","date_gmt":"2025-02-17T15:47:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/medicine.wsu.edu\/news\/?p=32903"},"modified":"2025-02-24T08:14:17","modified_gmt":"2025-02-24T16:14:17","slug":"national-geographic-glen-duncan-research","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/medicine.wsu.edu\/news\/2025\/02\/17\/national-geographic-glen-duncan-research\/","title":{"rendered":"National Geographic Features Glen Duncan, NEP Research on Walkable Neighborhoods"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>National Geographic featured a large national study led by Nutrition and Exercise Physiology Chair Glen Duncan, PhD, ACSM-CEP, that shows how the built environment influences how much people walk, an underrated activity with numerous health benefits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;There are clear connections between the neighborhood environment and behavior,&#8221; Duncan says in the article. &#8220;In this case, it&#8217;s physical activity.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Published in the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/aje\/advance-article\/doi\/10.1093\/aje\/kwae170\/7921540\">American Journal of Epidemiology<\/a>, the study of Washington State Twin Registry data found that each 1%&nbsp;increase in an area\u2019s \u201cwalkability\u201d resulted in 0.42%&nbsp;increase in residents&#8217; walking. When scaled up, a 55%&nbsp;increase in the walkability would result in about 19&nbsp;minutes of additional walking per week for every resident.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In terms of public health, that can add up to a big difference for the highly sedentary U.S.&nbsp;populace, Duncan noted. Walking is a simple tool that can achieve multiple health benefits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wsu-spacing-after--xsmall\">The research team included NEP co-authors Ally Avery, MS, Washington State Twin Registry scientific operations manager; Associate Professor Ofer Amram, PhD; and Bethany D.
