The art of medicine was on display this month at the Spokane County Medical Society\u2019s (SCMS) sixth annual arts and humanities contest for local medical and physician assistant students and residents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Several medical students and a graduate of the Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine showcased their creativity by participating in the contest, which included categories for best essay, poem, and image on the theme of \u201cThe Human Connection in Medicine.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe members of the contest judging panel were moved and impressed by the heartfelt words and images expressed in all the submissions,\u201d SCMS Medical Education Committee Chair Geoff Jones, MD, said in a press release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In the essay category, WSU medical student Michele Asmar, MS, contributed “The Strength of Softness” about the importance of empathy in medicine. MD alum Lizzie Schjelderup, MS, now a psychiatry resident at Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center in Spokane, shared the essay “Unclaimed Persons” about the power of acknowledging a patient’s humanity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In the poetry category, MD students Alexandra (Lexi) Linker, MS, contributed the poem “Tuesday, 6:33am PDT,” Jessica Bae, MS, shared “All the Ways I Learned to Look,” and Gal Snir, MS, contributed “The Surgery.”<\/p>\n\n\n
