Biomedical Seminar Series – Dr. Stephen Moriarty, PhD
October 2, 2019 @ 11:00 am - 12:00 pm
Dr. Stephen Morairty will be visiting WSU Spokane on October 2nd. Please plan to attend his seminar at 11:00am in SAC 249, entitled ‘EEG Biomarkers of Disease Progression in Mouse Models of Huntington’s Disease’
Sign up here for a meeting and/or meal time. Please share this email with your group to sign up.
Dr. Stephen Morairty is the senior director of the Center for Neuroscience at SRI International. Dr Morairty received his PhD from Dennis McGinty’s lab at UCLA. Following his postdoctoral research with Robbie Greene and Bob McCarley, he joined SRI International at the end of 1999 to work with Tom Kilduff.
Huntington’s Disease is a progressive neurodegenerative human disease with a known genetic cause. Although a simple genetic test can diagnose a patient, there are no clear biomarkers for the progression of the disease until the onset of major symptoms. Pre-symptomatic biomarkers are needed in order to determine efficacy of potential therapeutic interventions. Since the cause is understood, good rodent models of the disease have been developed. This talk will discuss longitudinal studies of 2 different mouse models of Huntington’s Disease that investigated the changes in sleep, diurnal rhythms and EEG patterns as the disease progressed. These studies show the EEG has a potential to provide early indications of disease presence and could contain biomarkers for following disease progression.
We look forward to seeing you there!
