Learning Outcomes

Speech and Hearing Sciences students earning a master’s degree with an emphasis in speech-language pathology will be able to demonstrate knowledge of principles and methods for prevention, assessment and intervention for:

  1. Articulation disorders
  2. Fluency disorders
  3. Voice and resonance disorders
  4. Receptive and expressive language disorders
  5. Swallowing disorders
  6. Cognitive aspects of communication disorders
  7. Social aspects of communication disorders
  8. Communication modalities
  9. The impact of hearing disorders on speech and language

These nine areas are termed the “Big Nine” knowledge and skill competency areas consisting of 191 individual goals.

In addition, students must communicate information clearly and effectively in written and oral form consistent with professional standards and must demonstrate:

  1. Knowledge of standards of ethical conduct
  2. Knowledge of the processes used in research and the integration of research principles into evidence-based clinical practice
  3. Knowledge of contemporary professional issues
