Camp Candoo

Camp Candoo is an intensive speech therapy and early literacy summer camp for children ages 5-12 with childhood apraxia of speech (CAS) or other severe speech disorders held at the WSU Spokane campus.

Dates: June 17-27, 2019. Applications will be reviewed beginning February 15, 2019 and will be open until filled.

Cost $950/two-week session. A $50 deposit is required by May 1 to reserve a position once your child has been accepted. Tuition includes evaluation and materials. We accept most insurance plans. This nine-day camp includes an assessment on the first day followed by eight days of individual and group therapy:

  • Each camper will receive 60 minutes of individual therapy daily in two separate treatment sessions. Sessions will target specific speech goals for each camper. Therapy will be based on the Dynamic Tactile Temporal Cueing¹ (DTTC) approach based on principles of motor learning.
  • In small group therapy, campers will have opportunities to practice their speech goals in different settings and work on early reading skills using a Phonic Faces² approach. One-to-one support will be provided.
  • In large group therapy, campers will practice their social communication goals and reinforce sound-letter awareness during snack and activity time. One-to-one support will be provided.
  • Three parent education sessions will be held concurrent to the 11:30/3:30 small group therapy session. Tentative topics will include, but are not limited to, the connection between speech and reading, differential diagnosis of speech disorders, school advocacy and IEPs. Topics will be chosen according to parent interests.

Our morning group is geared toward pre-literacy skills and younger children. Our afternoon group focuses on early literacy skills.

Camp Schedule

Before Camp
Each camper will be paired with a student clinician, who will develop rapport with your child prior to camp via Internet chat or pre-chat visit.

First Day of Camp
Your child will have a one-hour individual assessment as scheduled and a getting-to-know-each-other family activity.

Washington State University and Eastern Washington University work collaboratively to offer excellent research-based clinical teaching and training. Therapy will be provided by graduate level clinicians who are supervised by Drs. Amy Meredith and Nancy Potter, certified speech-language pathologists and well-known experts in the field of childhood motor speech disorders with more than 50 years of combined clinical experience.

Camp Candoo Application

To apply for Camp Candoo, complete the application. For children not being seen in our clinic, please upload a short video clip or a series of video clips showing your child in 3 different communication scenarios. Some possible communication scenarios include: conversation with adults, interaction with peers or siblings, describing an event, and a sample from a speech therapy session.
