Camp Candoo 2020

Camp Candoo is an intensive speech therapy and early literacy summer camp for children ages 5-10 with childhood apraxia of speech (CAS) or other severe speech disorders held at the WSU Health Sciences Spokane campus. Camp Candoo will be held June 15-26, 2020.

What we do

Washington State University and Eastern Washington University work collaboratively to offer excellent research-based clinical teaching and training throughout this nine-day camp. Therapy will be provided by graduate level clinicians who are supervised by Drs. Amy Meredith and Nancy Potter, certified speech-language pathologists and well-known experts in the field of childhood motor speech disorders with more than 50 years of combined clinical experience.

Camp includes an assessment on the first day followed by eight days of individual and group therapy.

  • Each camper will receive 60 minutes of individual therapy daily in two separate treatment sessions. Sessions will target specific speech goals for each camper. Therapy will be based on the Dynamic Tactile Temporal Cueing¹ (DTTC) approach based on principles of motor learning.
  • In small group therapy, campers will have opportunities to practice their speech goals in different settings and work on phonological awareness and early reading skills using a Phonic Faces² approach and multi-sensory cues. One-to-one support will be provided.
  • In large group therapy, campers will practice their social communication goals and reinforce sound-letter awareness during snack and activity time. One-to-one support will be provided.
  • Three parent education sessions will be held during or after Camp Candoo (via webinar). Tentative topics may include, but are not limited to, the connection between speech and reading, differential diagnosis of speech disorders, school advocacy and IEPs. Topics will be chosen according to parent interests.

Our morning group is geared toward pre-literacy skills and younger children. Our afternoon group focuses on early literacy skills.

Camper eligibility: Camp Candoo designed is for children with a primary diagnosis of CAS. Camp is intensive and not well-suited for children with co-occurring autism spectrum disorder or disruptive, impulse-control, or conduct disorders.
