Revised September 2020\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Structure of Final Oral Examination\u00a0<\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wsu-container wsu-border--add-left wsu-border--color-crimson-light wsu-spacing-padding-left--medium\" >\r\n    \n\n<p>The final oral examination is your opportunity to demonstrate breadth of knowledge and critical thinking and reasoning skills.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><strong>Length of exam:<\/strong> 1 \u00bd hours.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Length of student presentation:<\/strong> ~20 minutes\/case with ~10-15 minutes of questions and answers\/case.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Format of exam presentation:<\/strong> PowerPoint or similar software program.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Dates for the exam: <\/strong>October through mid- April during the final year of graduate school. The defense date is determined in consultation with your committee chair and committee members.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Due dates: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/gradschool.wsu.edu\/deadlines\/\">Graduate School due dates<\/a> for final exam scheduling.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Content: <\/strong>Oral examination will include 2 case presentations, questions related to the case presentations, and may include questions covering the nine major KASA content areas.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Committee Members\u00a0<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Students selecting the Non-Thesis\/Case Study Final Oral Exam option will be assigned a faculty advisor (committee chair) and two other committee members for their oral examination during their first semester of graduate school.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">General Instructions to the Graduate Student\u00a0<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Prepare two case studies of patients you have seen in clinic, practicum, or internship. Select patients with different etiologies.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Intensive Case Review Content\u00a0<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol>\n<li>Background \n<ul>\n<li>Describe your client using the International Classification of Functioning,\u00a0Disability, and Health (ICF) framework. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/nchs\/data\/icd\/icfoverview_finalforwho10sept.pdf\">ICF Framework (PDF)<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cultural and linguistic consideration\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reason for referral\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Therapy history \u2013 Stay compliant with HIPAA guidelines and remove all identifying information. For example: Do NOT include identifying location information (e.g. State \u201can outpatient clinic\u201d not \u201cUPCD Speech &amp; Hearing Clinic\u201d)\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Prior progress in therapy\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Assessment\u00a0\n<ul>\n<li>Results and interpretation of assessment, including diagnosis and relevant standardized and informal measures\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Resources utilized at this point (e.g., journal articles, class notes, textbooks, etc.)\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Treatment plan \n<ul>\n<li>Goals and objectives\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Evidence-based rationale for goals and objectives\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Resources utilized at this point (e.g., journal articles, class notes, textbooks, etc.)\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Treatment results \n<ul>\n<li>Goals and objectives met\/partially met\/unmet\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>End of semester recommendations \n<ul>\n<li>Did you discharge the patient? \n<ul>\n<li>If so, provide a rationale\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If not, what recommendations did you make for continuing treatment?\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Referrals made\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Personal reflection \n<ul>\n<li>What did you do well with this client?\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What would you do differently?\u00a0\n<ul>\n<li>Justify those differences. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How would you apply what you learned from this case to future cases?\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Resources utilized at this point (e.g., journal articles, class notes, textbooks, etc.)\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>References \n<ul>\n<li>Final slide for each case should include a reference list of a minimum of 10 journal articles per case study and any additional applicable resources (e.g., book chapters, etc.)\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Typical Timeline\u00a0<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You may want to select one patient from your first year of clinical experience, find and study related research, and begin preparing your case.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">G1 Fall\u00a0<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Meet with your assigned committee chair to discuss final defense options. We understand that some students are undecided about intensive case review or research at this time.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">G1 Spring\u00a0<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>File your Program of Study \u2013 required of all students.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">G2 Fall\u00a0<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Meet with your committee chair early in the semester to discuss your progress.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Defense Semester \u2013 G2 Fall or Spring\u00a0<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol>\n<li>Submit both cases to your committee chair for approval to move forward or revise and resubmit.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Find defense date that works for you and your committee and schedule your defense.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Submit your final examination scheduling form to the Graduate School at least 10 business days before your defense.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Send your PowerPoint to your committee at least 5 business days before your defense. If you are citing references that are likely unfamiliar to your committee, submit copies of the reference with the PowerPoint (e.g. Your client has Rubenstein-Taybi syndrome.
