MD Student Presents at International Alzheimer’s Conference

Nikki Delgado presents at Alzheimer's conference

Nikki Delgado, a third-year medical student at the WSU College of Medicine, presented her med scholar project research at the Alzheimer’s Association International Conference (AAIC) in Philadelphia over the summer.

With more than 14,000 attendees in 2024, the AAIC is the largest international conference on Alzheimer’s disease. Delgado had the opportunity to present her research on neurological disease with her poster: Associations of Plasma Biomarkers of Neurodegeneration with Characteristics Related to Type 1 Diabetes.

“Her poster was of interest to many researchers,” said Luciana Mascarenhas Fonseca, PhD, a research associate in the Department of Community and Behavioral Health and Delgado’s supervisor for the project. “She demonstrated the ability to present her findings and communicate analytically with professionals from various backgrounds, expanding her network and bringing visibility to the WSU College of Medicine.”

Delgado’s work is also resulting in two upcoming manuscripts. She says she had an exceptional experience presenting at the conference.

“I am deeply grateful for the invaluable support of my mentor, Dr. Luciana Fonseca,” Delgado said. “The opportunity to engage with leading researchers and hear about the latest breakthroughs in neuroimaging, biomarkers, clinical trials, and emerging therapies in Alzheimer’s and other neurodegenerative diseases was both inspiring and enriching.”
