Research

Dr. Lamp’s expertise and research is focused on fatigue, sleep, and cognitive performance in occupational settings, with expertise in aviation Fatigue Risk Management Systems (FRMS). As Primary Investigator for Washington State University’s Occupational Sleep Medicine Group (OSMG), she has been funded for over 13 years by aviation FRMS contracts and worked closely with the preeminent Dr. Gregory Belenky. The OSMG is one of the labs that provided the initial methodology for data collection on long range (LR) and ultra long range (ULR) flights that continues to be used for the US Federal Aviation Administration Federal Aviation Regulation 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 117 data collection exemptions. Current studies include assessing pilot fatigue, sleep, sleepiness, and cognitive performance during short-range, LR, and ULR commercial flight operations. Her papers published in Aerospace Medicine and Human Performance and Accident Analysis and Prevention and book chapters in Principles and Practice of Sleep Medicine and Sleep Deprivation and Disease focus on fatigue in the workplace, the FRMS process, and commercial aviation pilot sleep and cognitive performance. She has authored over 25 technical reports on FRMS routes. She has been invited to present on these topics both nationally and internationally. As a member of the Fatigue Countermeasures Working Group she authored a published guidance document for controlled rest (CR) on the flight deck. She is currently a member of the Fatigue Working Group, a subgroup within the Human Factors Task Force ARC. Her team’s aviation work now extends to qualitative research, to ensure the pilots’ voices inform aviation research.
