David Garcia Reflects on Hispanic Heritage Month

David Garcia on Hispanic Heritage

As part of Hispanic Heritage Month, David Garcia, MEd, associate dean for community, health equity, and belonging at the WSU College of Medicine, reflects on his inspirations and the issues facing Washington’s Latino community.

In an interview with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Garcia discusses his pride for his Mexican culture. “The people, music, hospitality, beauty, brilliance, and collective culture are what make me proud,” he said.

He also reminds readers to be mindful that Latino people continue to suffer from oppression often driven by people, power, and economics. He hopes others will recognize that their presence is essential for this state and country to exist.

“Listen to us. Do not make decisions on our behalf without our consultation,” he said. “The process of consultation begins early and must take place often. We know what our communities need to thrive.”
