The WSU Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine is credited with finding long-term solutions to providing access to quality health care for all Washingtonians in a new PBS Crosscut article.

The report highlights the college’s community based approach focused on placing more physicians in the state’s rural and medically underserved areas.

It also points to a recent WSU study that finds many dementia patients in Washington face racial disparities and longer travel distances to be seen by neurologists. Researchers say that can contribute to delayed diagnoses, higher costs of care, reduced chances of preserving cognitive function, and lower quality of life. Lead study author, Solmaz Amiri, from the Institute for Research and Education to Advance Community Health (IREACH), hopes the findings will help inform the placement of future medical resources.
