MD Students Present Health Equity Research at National Conferences

Two people stand on either side of a large academic poster displayed on a black presentation board at a conference. The poster includes charts, tables, and text with a red-and-white heading about disparities in bystander and EMS naloxone administration.

Students from the WSU Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine are presenting a series of health equity-focused research projects on the national stage.

Second-year medical students Megan Mattappally and Katie McCune presented their study of disparities in bystander and EMS naloxone administration at the 2026 National Association of Emergency Medical Services Physicians (NAEMSP) annual conference in Tampa, Florida. The project also included co-authors Teaghan Cowles, third-year medical students Haneul Ryou and Lauren Lee, and Pre-Clerkship Assessment Operations Lead Hannah Carlan, MPA.

Olivia Willis (MS2) and Victoria Caldera (MS2) will present at the western regional annual meeting for the Society of Academic Medicine conference in Los Angeles next month. Willis will present finding on emergency department care differences for abdominal pain, and Caldera will present on disparities in the emergency management of appendicitis.

The projects were supervised by Jamie Kennel, PhD, MAS, director of health equity education and acting regional medical campus dean for Vancouver.

Please join us in congratulating these students and their mentors on their efforts to improve access to quality health care for all!
