The latest state budget awards $2 million in funding to Maddie’s Place, a Spokane nonprofit that provides withdrawal care to infants born with neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS). A report from the Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine helped demonstrate the need for the nursery.

Babies born in Spokane County experience NAS at more than three times the national rate, according to the study lead by Eka Burduli, PhD, an associate professor in the Department of Community and Behavioral Health. A Spokesman-Review article about the funding news cited the research.
