Retreat: Tuesday, June 10, 2025, 1:00 pm – 5:00 pm

As members of the university community, many of us are driven to excel, have incredibly high expectations, and are very hard on ourselves. When we make inevitable mistakes, such as making an error, forgetting something important, or arriving late, self-criticism often takes over. However, research shows that self-compassion—treating yourself with the same kindness you offer a close friend—builds resilience, reduces stress, and improves overall wellbeing.

What MSC Is

Join us to learn the skills of self-compassion and mindfulness to enhance your capacity for emotional wellbeing, including more helpful ways of exploring our typical responses to difficulties that arise in our lives. MSC activities include short talks, experiential exercises, meditation, group discussion and home practices to give you the tools to help you bring compassion to yourself, and others. MSC is therapeutic, but it’s not therapy. The emphasis of the program is on building the resources of self-compassion and mindfulness through a process of self-discovery. We begin with mindfulness before turning with loving awareness toward difficult experiences (thoughts, emotions, or sensations). Then we turn that loving awareness toward ourselves. Together, mindfulness and self-compassion comprise a state of warm, connected presence during difficult moments in our lives.

How MSC Can Benefit You

Join us for the Mindful Self-Compassion (MSC) Course, an 8-week, evidence-based program created by Drs. Kristin Neff and Christopher Germer. Through meditations, in-class exercises, and practical tools, you’ll learn:
• A three-step process to meet overwhelm and face challenges with confidence
• The two most important questions to ask to create a healthier work-life balance
• How to quiet your self-critical voice and strengthen your compassionate voice
• Words and gestures to calm painful emotions
• How to navigate difficult emotions with greater ease
