Health Sciences Library Tip: National Library of Medicine

The National Library of Medicine (NLM) is a branch of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The NLM provides access to biomedical information resources including PubMed, MedlinePlus, ClinicalTrials.gov, National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) genomic databases, the NCBI Bookshelf, and terminology standards which underlie clinical, research, pharmaceutical, and laboratory information technology. The library creates some of its own content, but primarily curates and enables retrieval of relevant content created by researchers and publishers.

NLM funding supports innovations in health information creation, use, and retrieval, like The Green Button. Additionally, free training is available through the Network of the National Library of Medicine. The NLM hosts History of Medicine exhibits, which are available to view online and in person. Visit the traveling display on artificial intelligence at the WSU Spokane Health Sciences Library through Oct. 26.

Pro Tip: While nih.gov results might return in a general browser search, recognize the potential for bias in search engine rankings. Best practice is to start your search from the NCBI or PubMed home page. You will be glad you did!
