Jesus Mendoza, a third-year medical student at the Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine, was awarded an annual scholarship of $10,000 by the National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME) and National Medical Fellowships (NMF).

The program aims to support aspiring physicians with demonstrated financial need and a strong history of service, according to the NBME. Twenty students are selected annually.

“Until you’re actually on this journey of becoming a physician, it’s hard to fully appreciate how much it will change your perspective on the joys and pains of medicine,” said Peter J. Katsufrakis, MD, NBME president and CEO, in a release. “I hope that the changes you’re experiencing are challenging, refreshing, and help reveal the strength you bring to the table as well as the compassion you have for others.”
