American Psychological Association Highlights Contingency Management Research

Patient and psychologist have mental health conversation

The American Psychological Association is putting a national spotlight on contingency management (CM), and researchers from the Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine are contributing to the conversation.

Department of Community and Behavioral Health and PRISM Collaborative faculty Michael McDonell, PhD, and Katherine (Kait) Hirchak, PhD, MHPA, spoke to the APA about their research showing CM can successfully incentivize recovery from substance use disorders. The approach has shown success with alcohol, stimulants, opioids, and other substances.

The researchers also highlight how CM can be culturally adapted for specific populations, including by partnering with American Indian and Alaska Native communities to administer the intervention.
