A Welcome From the Vice Chair

All fourth year students at WSU’s Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine complete a four-week emergency medicine rotation and are able to select from a wide variety of truly excellent physician groups and emergency departments including urban trauma centers, cardiac and stroke centers, and rural emergency departments in some of the most remote and underserved areas of Washington. Our EM attending physicians are outstanding and engaged at local, state, national, and international levels, that are consistently recognized by medical students for their ability to provide a meaningful educational experience in emergency medicine and the people we serve.

EM-interested students have access to specialized educational opportunities in EMS, point-of-care ultrasound, toxicology, invasive procedures, and other EM specialty and subspecialty interests. Our EM Interest Group is active and engaged in many fun activities. Emergency medicine is a popular and competitive specialty and our WSU-affiliated EM physician advisors provide a strong and supportive system for career exploration and planning.

“Through the EM workshops hosted by Dr. Heine and Dr. Hodges (e.g., EMIG, AHD), as well as the clerkship EM mentorship program established by Dr. Myers, I feel like I am entering my fourth year of training with the confidence and skills necessary to operate at — and in some cases — even beyond a sub-intern level as I prepare for my upcoming EM audition rotations. Between rotating with my EM mentor, Dr. Laselle, at Sacred Heart and my experiences during the LIC, I have already had the opportunity to intubate upwards of 20 patients, perform my first lumbar puncture, and suture a traumatic laceration (to name a few). From talking with my peers who have had equally incredible opportunities and seeing the EM match results from Class of 2024, I have no doubts that Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine’s EM-bound students will continue to match into top programs around the country.”
