Student learning in Virtual Clinic Center

Department of Medical Education and Clinical Sciences

The Department of Medical Education and Clinical Sciences (DMECS) at the WSU Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine is structured to enhance cross-discipline and cross-professional engagement throughout the college and WSU.

Statewide Effort

Built to support the statewide, community-based mission of the college, DMECS includes faculty and faculty leaders distributed across the state. Faculty are based at one of four medical campuses – the central campus (Spokane) and the three regional medical campuses (Tri-Cities, Everett, and Vancouver). The effort of our faculty are not constrained by city limits and extend into the entire geographic region and beyond.

Designed for Impact

Unlike many other medical schools where departments are divided by specialty, DMECS houses specialties in a united model led by vice chairs within the department that better supports the college mission.

This engagement results in multi-professional ingenuity and innovation with broad reaching impact in research, education, clinical care, and service.

To accomplish the tasks DMECS hosts more than 2,000 faculty spread across Washington

Education

DMECS faculty build, teach, and operationalize several key educational initiatives within the WSU College of Medicine.

Research and Scholarship

Faculty engage in the breadth of scholarly effort; medical education research, community-based participatory research, practice-based research network leadership, and specialty-specific research. Faculty also support future generations in the development of their scholarly skills through our student and resident research initiatives. Specific focus of research include:

Clinical Care

DMECS faculty support the clinical needs of communities across the state. The vast majority of our faculty are employed by clinical and community partners. A smaller portion are working to build our interdisciplinary clinical practice through Range Community Clinic and our associated GME clinics.

Service

Our faculty are engaged in leadership roles and with international and national professional societies. They serve at all levels of the university and college system. They participate in community outreach and community service and engage in statewide committees and groups and societies to further the mission of the college. Some examples include:
