Psychiatry

A Welcome From the Vice Chair

Thank you for your interest in Psychiatry at the Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine-Washington State University. On behalf of the faculty, staff, and students, we welcome you.

We are dedicated to academic excellence in the education of medical students, as reflected in a competency-based curriculum that is designed to provide all our students with comprehensive knowledge and outstanding skills in understanding the nature and treatment of psychiatric and behavioral health disorders. Our approach to medical education is collaborative and creative. We are actively working toward more inclusion, diversity, and equity in our approach to mental and behavioral health and wellness. We strive to positively impact rural and underserved communities in Washington State through service, advocacy, and research efforts. Our students’ research ideas and clinical efforts are closely mentored and nurtured. We aim to train the next generation of physicians to be outstanding clinicians, surgeons, researchers, teachers, advocates, and leaders. Our graduates have successfully matched in Psychiatry residency programs each year, and are finding success in the next stage of their journey to become a psychiatrist. With rates of depression, anxiety, substance use, other severe mental disorders, and a society with extensive adverse experiences and trauma, the demand for psychiatrists has increased dramatically.

“The Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine was incredibly supportive of me during my time with them. The kind, reliable, altruistic culture they aim to cultivate is a major part of why I chose the program and is core to the type of clinician I am always striving to be in psychiatry.”
