A variety of leadership opportunities exist within the College of Medicine, including being representative on college committees. These are tremendous opportunities to work with faculty, staff, and fellow students to assist in formulating policy, developing services, supporting students, and representing the College of Medicine to external constituencies. In order to allow for broad representation and access to leadership development, students are limited to serve on only one committee or subcommittee at a time.
To serve on college committees, students must be in good academic standing and are expected to uphold the professionalism code of conduct outlined in the student handbook.
Selection for student representatives is a process that Student Affairs oversees, while some committees run their own selections. Generally, new opportunities are posted each January/February, though a few opportunities may arise throughout the year.
Admissions Committee
The Chair, in consultation with the Admissions Committee, and the deans for admissions and recruitment, student affairs, and assessment and evaluation, appoints up to two student members per year to the Committee. The Admissions Office and Chair will make an announcement when open positions for student representatives are available and the process for signing up.

Curriculum Committee
Responsible for setting the vision of the curriculum for the MD program. Meets regularly (currently once a month) to set policy, discuss, debate and set curricular principles and assure curriculum delivery matches vision.

Curriculum Committee Subcommittee/Assessment
Responsible for recommendations to Curriculum Committee for vision of Student Assessment for the MD program. Meets regularly (currently once a month) to provide input for policy, discuss, debate and set assessment principles and assure assessment match’s the vision.

Responsible for recommendations to Curriculum Committee for vision of Foundations of Medicine for the MD program. Meets regularly (currently once a quarter) to provide input for policy, discuss, debate and set foundations of medicine principles and foundations curriculum matches vision.

Curriculum Committee Subcommittee/Learning Resources
Responsible for recommendations to Curriculum Committee for vision of learning resources for the MD program. Meets regularly (currently once a month) to provide input for policy, discuss, debate, and set principles that impact the selection and use of learning resources.

Equity Committee
The Equity Committee advises the Dean on the development of policies and practices that promote diversity and inclusion in the College of Medicine. This includes identifying underrepresented and underserved populations and developing initiatives to facilitate an environment conducive to diversity and inclusion in its education, research, clinical care, and service. The committee reviews implementation of the College of Medicine Diversity Policy and evaluates the quality and success of diversity initiatives.

Inclusion Matrix Workshop
The Inclusion Matrix Workgroup (IMW) was formed in 2017 to facilitate the matrix-based approach to inclusion at the Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine. The IMW meets monthly and is led by the LCME Standard 3 lead. The IMW was established to provide cross-departmental communication, DCI monitoring and accountability, and engage in continuous quality improvement. The IMW will maintain its original purpose in addition to taking on a primary goal of developing, implementing, and engaging in continuous quality improvement of a comprehensive College of Medicine Diversity and Inclusion Plan.

Student Evaluation, Program, and Awards Committee (SEPAC)
A student representative from years 3 or 4 may be elected by the student body to serve on this committee. The SEPAC Chair will make an announcement when open positions for student representatives are available and the process for signing up.
SEPAC makes recommendations regarding the standards and procedures for all College of Medicine medical student evaluation, advancement, graduation, and disciplinary action. The student representative will be engaged in discussions regarding general principles and will have voting rights, except that the representative but will recuse themselves for discussions that may be considered highly sensitive related to a cohort peer/or where conflict of interest (personal or financial) exists and for votes related to their cohort, or for any conflicts of interest (personal, financial).
