Family Medicine Sub-Internship Elective

The four-week family medicine sub-internship rotation provides students with advanced training experience including both inpatient and outpatient rotations. You will work side by side with our Family Medicine residents including case conferences and weekly didactics that are integrated into the WSU Family Medicine Residency Program – Pullman.

  • Expect to have three weekends free. 
  • All Sub-I’s will present one didactics lecture to our residents, faculty, and other students.  
  • Sub-I’s will be responsible for arranging their own housing and transportation. Pullman has a public bus service, but it is limited. Personal transportation is advised. 

Schedule

One Week

Outpatient family medicine at our residency clinic on the Pullman Regional Hospital medical campus

Full spectrum outpatient family medicine including adult medicine, pediatric medicine, gynecology, family planning, MSK, outpatient procedures, behavioral health and more! 

  • Work with a variety of family medicine faculty and residents 
  • Day shifts (~8am-5pm) 

One–Two Weeks

Inpatient work in our inpatient service at Pullman Regional Hospital

  • Join a team of one attending, one senior resident, and one intern. 
  • Expect to work in the same capacity as an intern with assigned patients. 
  • Day shifts only (~6:30am-~6pm)  

One–Two Weeks

Work in the Emergency Department at Pullman Regional Hospital.  

  • Work with a team of 1–2 Emergency Department physicians and a family medicine resident during the busy evening shifts. 
  • This will include a Friday evening shift for a great clinical experience. 
  • Evening shifts (~3pm- ~11pm) 

Training Site

Students will complete their Sub-I elective rotation at Pullman Regional Hospital (PRH). PRH is a 25-bed critical access hospital including, Intensive Care Services, Emergency Services, Surgical Services, BirthPlace, and a variety of outpatient services. Located in the Palouse region of eastern Washington, the hospital overlooks Washington State University’s Pullman campus.

Requirements for Acceptance for a Sub-I Elective Rotation

  • Active enrollment as a fourth-year medical student during the assigned Sub-I elective rotation
  • Completed Sub-I Rotation Application including submission of required documents
    • Letter of good standing from your medical school uploaded as part of the Sub-I Rotation Application
    • Liability insurance uploaded as part of the Sub-I Rotation Application
  • For Students at LCME or Osteopathic Accredited Medical Schools
    • Please aim to submit applications as early as possible and at least two months prior to the dates you are interested in. We may be able to accept additional applications on a rolling basis
    • Once approved you will be contacted by our residency program ahead of the start of your sub-internship.

Fourth-year medical students interested in a Sub-I rotation with WSU Family Medicine Residency – Pullman must complete the Sub-I application available on our website. 

Application for fall 2024 will open in February 2024.
