Fariya Iqbal, MD

PROFILE

What is your proudest accomplishment to date?

My proudest accomplishment to date is choosing to leave everything familiar at the age of 19 to pursue medicine in a country I had only known from small labels on everyday objects. I grew up in Saudi Arabia and had very limited exposure to life outside a familiar cultural setting, so moving to China alone for medical school meant stepping into a completely new language, culture, and system without any prior exposure or support network. It was uncertain and, at times, overwhelming. But it became one of the most defining decisions of my life because I truly believed that becoming a doctor was my calling.

Where is home for you?

Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

What are your interests related to medicine?

My primary interest in medicine lies in caring for underserved and marginalized populations. I am drawn to the responsibility of providing thoughtful, high-quality care to patients who may not otherwise have consistent access to it. To me, medicine is not just about treatment, but about showing up for patients where the need is greatest and ensuring that care is delivered with equity and compassion. I am also interested in the dynamic nature of medicine and the constant need to adapt to evolving clinical situations. I find that I work well in fast-paced environments and am particularly drawn to settings like critical care.

What are your hobbies or interests outside of residency?

I like anything that helps me step away from screens and reset. Cooking is a big one for me, especially trying out new recipes. It’s relaxing, and I like that it feels creative without being too serious. I enjoy doing hands-on activities like drawing, painting, crochet, pottery, and henna. It’s nice to slow down and work on something tangible for a change. Lastly, I’m a die-hard cat person and love spending time around them. I find them mildly dramatic and endlessly amusing.

PROFILE

What is your proudest accomplishment to date?

My proudest accomplishment isn’t a title, an award, or even a project. It’s the ability to keep moving forward when the ground underneath me shifts, sometimes literally. Whether it was walking to school under sniper fire in Baghdad, with my mother gripping one hand and my little sister holding the other, founding a healthcare NGO during a humanitarian crisis, or rebuilding my life from scratch in a new country, I kept choosing hope over fear. That choice, again and again, is my proudest accomplishment. Everything else I’ve achieved is simply a reflection of that decision.

Where is home for you?

For me, home isn’t just a place, it’s wherever my family’s love and strength are with me. It’s the lessons from Baghdad, the warmth from Istanbul, the growth I experienced in Hawai’i, and the hope I carry with me in Washington.
