Pediatric Sub-Internship Elective

The four-week pediatric medicine sub-internship rotation provides fourth-year medical students interested in pursuing residency in pediatrics with advanced training in the care of pediatric patients. Students are involved as active participants in the care of patients are integrated into the WSU Pediatric Residency Program–Spokane. The Sub-Internship is hosted by Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center.

Experience Structure

Students will work under the direct supervision of attending physicians alongside current residents. The experience may include inpatient and or outpatient pediatrics. All students are integrated in the teaching environment through participation in didactic sessions.

Primary Training Site

Providence Sacred Heart Children’s Hospital is the primary training site and host for the Sub-I Experience. The hospital is the region’s only pediatric hospital with its own pediatric emergency department. The 160-bed facility opened in 2003 and offers the region’s highest level of neonatal and pediatric intensive care, psychiatry, comprehensive hematology and oncology programs, as well as specialized trauma care for children with emergency medical needs. The team includes more than 120 specialists—representing 28 pediatric subspecialties—to treat both medical and surgical needs. In 2022, Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center & Sacred Heart Children’s Hospital was recognized by U.S News and World Report as a Best Regional Hospital. In addition to their acute services, Providence Sacred Heart Children’s Hospital boasts a full continuum of pediatric primary and specialty care through Providence Medical Group, comprised of over 90 primary and specialty care clinics throughout Eastern Washington.

Requirements for Acceptance for a Sub-I Elective Rotation

  • Active enrollment as a fourth-year medical student at a US medical school during the assigned Sub-I elective rotation.
  • Students who are planning on pursuing pediatrics for residency in the upcoming Match cycle.
  • Unfortunately visa sponsorship and observerships are not available for this experience.
  • Completed Sub-I Rotation Application including submission of required documents
    • Letter of good standing from your medical school uploaded as part of the Sub-I Application
    • Medical School Transcript
    • Curriculum Vitae (CV)

To apply you must be an active, fourth year medical student in good standing by June 29, 2026. If you are selected as a final candidate, you will be onboarded by Providence Sacred Hearth.

Please note: Washington State University, University of Washington and PNWU medical students should contact their clerkship coordinator to request a rotation experience at Sacred Heart before completing an application. WSU, UW, and PNWU medical students should still email PedsSpokane.Medicine@wsu.edu to let them know their interest in the program.
