Programs to provide notice to residents on the standards for dress and appearance and what constitutes professional appearance. This should be provided during new resident orientation and reviewed periodically during residency.

Residents and fellows are expected to comply with program and clinical training site standards for dress and appearance while on active duty and when representing the program. Exemptions to the dress and appearance standards may be made for special occasions such as off-site meetings.

To assist with compliance to dress and appearance standards, all residents and fellows are provided with two white lab coats or one white lab coat and one lightweight jacket at the beginning of their program. Two white lab coats or a lab coat and a jacket are at the discretion of the program. The white lab coat and jacket are branded with WSU College of Medicine GME logo, residency program name, and trainee name. Co-branding with the clinical site or partner is permissible.

It is the responsibility of the Trainee to wear the lab coat and jacket according to program standards. It is also the responsibility of the resident and fellow to maintain the lab coat and jacket so that it is clean and wrinkle free including cost of laundering. If the lab coat becomes stained, torn, worn, or unpresentable, the resident and fellow should contact their program administrator or program coordinator for repair or replacement.

The white lab coat or issued jacket should be worn in the learning environments to promote the professionalism, branding, and image of the training program. Residents and fellows are always required to wear an identification badge while in a clinical setting.

In some clinical settings, scrubs may be required or desired. Residents and fellows must provide their own scrubs if not provided by the hospital. Additionally, the scrub color and design must comply with hospital or clinic policies.
